Yep, my predictions last week were right. The Korean Plague has reared it's ugly head once more, and it's learned a new trick or two. You would think that my body would have built up SOME kind of immunity. I'm here to tell you, that is not the case. Let me tell you how it all began. So Sunday night we had a dinner appointment at our branch president's house. Things were fine and dandy, and I didn't have a care in the world. When it came time to leave, there were no more buses running (we were about 30 minutes away from our house by bus) so our branch president offered to drive us home. Elder Lee and I were sitting in the back with one of his kids when all of a sudden, my nose completely plugged up. No warning. One minute I was fine, the next I almost couldn't breath. Pretty drastic, I know. I shook it off though, thinking maybe it was just because of the night air. The next day was a very slow incline, almost unnoticable. Then Tuesday rolled around. Tuesday was probably the hottest day of this past week, yet that was the day I was wearing my winter coat. I had the chills all throughout my body, but staying at home wasn't an option because we had district meeting and there were 4 other missionaries who didn't know our area coming. So we had to be there to guide them. So yeah, Tuesday was rough. Wednesday, we HAD to go to one of our other proselyting areas to have a baptismal record filled out, so again, rest was not an option. I thought I would be fine though. I even thought I was getting better, but some of the people that we visited while in the other city said I looked quite the opposite. Luckily, one of the members we visited had a myriad of home remedies, and made me try them all. Let me see if I can remember them all. Hmm, fermented olive leaves, ginger root paste, ginger tea, cranberry tea and honey, citrus tea, uhh.. what else? I can't really remember. But yeah, she made me take all of those. I probably drank about a gallon of tea that day alone...
The next day, my body didn't hurt! Hooray! I was still pretty congested, but I could at least move my body without wanting to die. It was a holiday that day though, so again, nobody was outside. Actually, that holiday is kind of interesting. Let me tell you about it. So it is the Anniversary of Korea's foundation as a country... kind of. But here's the thing. It's called Ge-cheon jeol, and the story behind it is that in the year 2333BC God's grandson (yeah, you read that right....) founded Korea. His name was apparently Dan-gun. And, yeah. That's pretty much all I learned. My companion didn't know too much about it, but he knew at least that much. ANYWAY, so we did some member visits that day because there weren't too many people outside. Friday, the switch happened. I started getting better, but my companion started sniffling. But, since he has already been through the military, he is all about "toughing it out", or at least he thought he could. Friday, after our English class, one of our members wanted to take us out for dinner. Originally he wanted to take us to eat dop soup again, but I told him we would rather try something new (see how I avoided that?). We tried something new alright. He took us to eat something called Sun-dae. (that's read like Soon day, not the delicious ice cream dessert sundae...unfortunately) Guess what it is. Pig intestine soup. Yippee!! Yeah... I will be honest. It was gross. I don't need to go into excruciating detail with that one. Suffice it to say, it was black, chewy and I wanted to heave (moreso than with the fat ball inside of my dog soup).
Sunday, my companion got the plague bad. Which proves to me that it is indeed a really strong virus and it's not only me being week. He, a returned Korean soldier, got the plague. I still have the remnant sniffles, but he's got it full blown. BUT DON'T WORRY!! We will live :) I just wanted to share the adventure of Asian disease with you once again. It really is fascinating to me because I was never the type to get really sick. BUT, this is my mission blog, not a web forum on diseases, so I will stop sidetracking. Sorry about that.
This weekend we get to see conference. I am so excited!!! Missionary work has been harder than usual here lately, but we have some promising prospects and goals and we are trying to make the most of them. Have a good week everybody!
